La Faune Connectée
Season 2, Episode 4 — A Dive into Prehistory
As part our on-going assistance to Manitoba Fisheries in their Lake Sturgeon research, LdBWA members guided the Film Crew from Manito Media in filming an episode of “La Faune Connectée” (Connected Wildlife) on the Winnipeg River.
“La Faune Connectée” is a French language production that airs on CBC French, TFO, Apple TV and elsewhere. The series follows the obstacles and adventures of Canadian wildlife biologists as they seek out wild animals to capture them and install various tracking technologies. The studies of these scientists are crucial at a time when Canadian wildlife habitats are under pressure from climate change and environmental disturbances of all kinds. The series explores the various tools used by the biologists, the animals they study, and the thrilling adventure of tracking them down.
Filmed in 2023 and premiering on TV in the summer of 2024, this episode follows Manitoba Eastern Fisheries Biologist Eric Mullen and a team of biologists and technicians from around the province as they capture Lake Sturgeon for sampling, weighing, measuring, and installing Passive Integrated Responder (PIT) Tags. Similar to microchips used in pet dogs and cats, PIT tags last the lifetime of the fish and are widely used in fisheries studies to track fish movement, survival, and growth over time.
